This example aims to demonstrate the effortless generation of an L shape excavation with the tools of our DeepEX – Shoring and tunnel design software, and the analysis of the 2D section and 3D model with the implemented Finite Element Analysis engines. DeepEX, through its graphical interface and model wizards, is a great tool for the structural and geotechnical design of any deep excavation model and the evaluation of the retaining systems with various methods.


Our latest addition to the superior software suite, our 3D Finite Element Analysis engine guarantees to provide you valuable insights in your excavation system behavior, considering full soil-structure interactions. The advantage of our 3D FEM analysis is that the 3D FEM models can be automatically generated in seconds with a click of a button, and the user can make real-time adjustments to the actual generated model.


In this example we illustrate the following processes in DeepEX:

  • Generate the 2D model with voice commands: DeepEX can generate a full 2D section model in seconds. In the voice command area of the software, we type “Create an 18 feet deep excavation with struts and press “Enter”. The software will create the model with all construction stages. Figure 4 shows the typed command and the generated 2D model.

  • Generate the 3D frame model in DeepEX: Generating 3D models in DeepEX is a streamlined process, offering unparalleled flexibility. In this scenario we will actually draw the 3D model shape directly in the DeepEX model area, the software will be generated automatically, and we can adjust the strut and waler configurations manually.

  • Generate the 3D FEM model in DeepEX with the click of a button: With a click of a button, the 3D model transitions to a 3D FEM model automatically. We can review the generated model (all construction stages), define the desired FEM mesh density (options from Coarse to Very Fine mesh), and the program can generate the mesh automatically. The 3D FEM analysis in DeepEX will give also all structural checks for all walls and supports.
