Two recent deep excavations in Montreal designed with DeepEX

Two deep excavations in Montreal Canada were recently completed. Their design was performed with the DeepEX software. The excavations were designed by Alexandre LeBlanc, eng., Substructur, Montreal Canada with Deep Excavation assisting with our expertise.

One excavation involved the construction of secant pile wall supported by two levels of tiebacks to protect an adjacent building. In other areas next to streets, the excavation was supported by soldier pile walls with tiebacks and rakers. The excavation was approximately 7.5m to 10.0m deep. Deflections next to the building were kept at very small levels. The excavation was designed with the DeepEX software by Deep Excavation.

Lachine Canal – Circular shaft with secant piles

A circular shaft excavation approximately 29m deep is required to perform repairs to an old water tunnel constructed in the 1950s that crosses the Lachine canal in Montreal. The excavation extends approximately 20m to bedrock, and then another 9m into rock. The solution was to provide a secant pile wall with 9.0m diameter that was attached next to the existing concreted shaft. 1.0m diameter piles were utilized and two concrete ring beams were provided to account for unbalanced loads and minimize risks in case construction tolerances were not met. The excavation was designed with the DeepEX software by Deep Excavation.
