Underpinning is a highy specialized construction. Underpinning is the total or partial resupport of an existing structure by a new foundation system. The method may consist of concrete piers, drilled or jacked pile foundations, or even ground freezing. Installation is done always in stages so that the damage risk associated with transferring the load from the existing to the new foundations can be minimized.

Underpinning requires a careful evaluation of existing building loads and proposed underpinning method, monitoring of the existing structure for signs of distress, and expert quality control.
