While rock is often the best foundation material it too may need
to be stabilized in many engineering problems. Rock stability
issues typically include wedge sliding, overturning, slope stability,
and rock falls. Because rock mass behavior is mainly controlled
by jointing, stability can seldomly be evaluated by simple wedge
analyses (except for projects that fall under text-book cases).
Hence, experienced engineers employ statistical tools and empirical
charts in combination with closed form solutions to come to a
solution.
Deep Excavation LLC provides design services for rock stability
projects and construction services through our affiliated contractors.
Figure above shows a rock failure on a near vertical excavation
face in New Jersey. Careful advanced planning and construction
monitoring can minimize or eliminate such undesirable occurances.
